Bottle Bill Repeal

Proposed Bottle Bill Repeal

There is a bill proposing to repeal the 5-cent container deposit, or “Bottle Bill,” that is progressing to the House or Senate floor. Mass Audubon opposes the bill (H.646), which would roll back the Commonwealth’s most effective litter prevention and recycling program by replacing the 5-cent deposit with a 1-cent “litter tax”. The “litter tax” would end after three years, leaving cities and towns to pay the entire cost of cleaning up can and bottle litter.
